Voice ServicesMSV's satellite phone service supports two-way circuit-switched voice services. MSV markets satellite telephone and both circuit and packet-switched data services to businesses that have nationwide coverage requirements, particularly those operating in geographic areas that lack significant terrestrial coverage, such as natural resource companies, utilities and telecommunications companies that require backup and restorable support, and public safety organizations. Wholesale CapacityIn addition to offering managed services to MSV's core direct customer base, MSV also sells bulk capacity on a wholesale basis to service provider partners for their own special purpose networks. MSV provides service to about 175,000 more users through these indirect channels. A large majority of these indirect users access the network for fleet management and asset tracking services through companies that include GeoLogic Solutions, Wireless Matrix, Transcore and SkyBitz, relying on the company's ability to ensure availability of network connectivity over the entirety of North American roadways. MSV's SatellitesMSV operates satellites at 101° WL (MSAT-2) and 106.5° WL (MSAT-1) and has replacement satellites under construction and holds appropriate regulatory authorizations. The new satellites will be launched beginning in late 2009. Until then, MSV is authorized to begin deploying a next-generation hybrid network using the company's existing satellites, MSAT-1 and MSAT-2. This network will feature a "transparent" user device with the size and functionality of a typical cell phone. The existing satellites require a companion device to boost the satellite RF signal to this user device. Once the next generation satellites are launched and the new network is in place this companion will no longer be necessary. The current MSAT satellites are capable of handling thousands of simultaneous secure and reliable voice calls and low speed data transmissions. The new satellites, now under construction, will provide more than ten times this capacity. More importantly, the new satellites are optimized for mobile broadband services, including IP-based voice and dispatch, audio and video. |
